🧪 Volume Unit Converter
How It Works
Enter a value in any field for instant conversion across all units. Core relationships: 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 1,000,000 mL; 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L; 1 quart = ¼ gallon ≈ 946 mL; 1 cubic foot ≈ 28.3 L (the unit on US refrigerator specs); 1 cubic inch = 16.387064 mL exactly.
One Word, Two Gallons
The gallon is the most treacherous unit on this page because two incompatible versions survive:
| US gallon | Imperial gallon (UK) | |
|---|---|---|
| Liters | 3.785 | 4.546 |
| Fluid ounces | 128 US fl oz | 160 imp fl oz |
| Where you'll meet it | US fuel prices, milk jugs | UK fuel economy (mpg), older Commonwealth texts |
The 20% gap means UK "miles per gallon" figures always look better than US ones for the same car — 40 mpg (imperial) ≈ 33 mpg (US). This tool uses the US gallon. Even the fluid ounce differs: 29.57 mL (US) vs 28.41 mL (imperial).
Converting Recipes Without Tears
- 1 US cup ≈ 237 mL (nutrition labels round to 240); 1 quart = 4 cups; 1 tablespoon = 15 mL = 3 teaspoons (5 mL each).
- Australian tablespoons are 20 mL — four teaspoons, not three. An Australian recipe's "2 tbsp" is 33% more than a US one.
- A UK pint (568 mL) ≠ a US pint (473 mL): beer glasses and recipe pints alike. "A pint's a pound the world around" only works with US pints of water.
- Volume → weight is ingredient-specific: a cup of flour weighs ~120 g but a cup of honey ~340 g. For baking accuracy, convert to grams with our weight converter and a per-ingredient density.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cc the same as a milliliter?
Yes, exactly: 1 cubic centimeter = 1 mL. Engine displacement ("a 1,500 cc engine" = 1.5 L) and medical dosing both use cc interchangeably with mL.
What is a cubic foot used for?
Refrigerators ("18 cu ft"), moving boxes, and freight. 1 ft³ ≈ 28.3 L, so an 18 cu ft fridge holds about 510 liters.
How do water utilities measure volume?
Usually in cubic meters (1 m³ = 1,000 L), sometimes in hundred-cubic-feet units (CCF ≈ 2,832 L) in the US. Enter either in this tool to compare bills across systems.
Why does engine displacement appear in cubic inches?
Classic American cars quoted displacement in cubic inches — a "350" small-block is 350 in³ ≈ 5.7 L. Modern spec sheets use liters, but the old numbers live on in model names.
